A message from Mayor Omayra Andino

Dear Neighbor,

I am writing to remind you that Tuckahoe’s Election Day is less than a month away. For the first tIme in its history, residents voted for the Village Board elections to be held in November.

I’m on the ballot - along with Trustees Darryl Taylor and Josh Gaccione - and your vote on November 7th will allow us to keep working on YOUR behalf.

Our collective experience on the Board – Darryl in law enforcement, Josh in the military and education, and mine as CEO of a $65M not-for-profit – equip us with the insights and skills to lead our community into the future. We’re proud of our achievements with the Village’s finances, infrastructure, public safety, legislation, and making Tuckahoe a desirable destination for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

We’re excited about doing even more together!

One of the achievements I’m most proud of is the upgrade of the Village bond rating to AA+ by S&P Global. This is a first for Tuckahoe and will enhance our ability to borrow and invest in our community. We also worked to land $2 million in grants for major improvements, such as the upgrade of Main Street Park, renovation of the bathrooms at your Community Center, 34 new electric vehicle charging stations on our streets and in our parking lots, and the upcoming, dramatic renovation of your Public Library. These things all add to our quality of life.

In the past two years:

  • We have paved 30 percent of our roads, literally smoothing our travel and saving countless tires from the ravages of potholes.
  • We’re also addressing the one issue many have mentioned: traffic lights. We’ve installed sensors at three intersections (Main & Fairview, Columbus & Fisher, and Marbledale & Fisher), which have improved traffic flow. With the help of federal dollars, we will tackle the complex intersection at Main Street & Depot Square
  • The critical, multiyear work to upgrade our aging sewer system is ongoing.

Public safety is essential to Village life, and I’m so proud of the agencies that contribute to our well-being. Actions speak louder than words, and the Board has increased the police budget annually, while the Police Department has received grants for traffic safety and youth programs. The Board also recently completed new contracts for our Police and the Department of Public Works. These agreements demonstrate our commitment to the workers who provide the essential services residents have come to appreciate.

Other major accomplishments since I came into office include the formation of the Tuckahoe Historic Preservation Commission and the passage of legislation to safeguard our history. We felt steps were needed to preserve Tuckahoe’s past, and we thank you for your support of this important legislation. We recognize that “it takes a village,” and the business of Village government is no different. More than 50 of your Tuckahoe neighbors are our partners in government, giving their time to work on committees and boards for the betterment of our community. And forging relationships with state legislators at all levels of government has been and will continue to be beneficial for Tuckahoe.

We are committed to fostering a sense of belonging, and have created opportunities for our community to come together – including:

  • A Memorial Day remembrance for our veterans to share their stories
  • Revamped robust movie nights in Main Street Park
  • The Tuckahoe 5K, raising more than $20k for the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EMS), which tirelessly serves our community
  • The Halloween Creepy Candy Crawl down Main Street (coming again October 28th, 4-5:30 p.m.), which drew nearly 1,000 people last year

I’m proud of our leadership record and humbled by your support in giving me this opportunity. Together we’ve accomplished so much, but much remains to be done, especially in the age of climate change. We have flood mitigation and aging infrastructure to tackle - complicated long-term projects. We continue to brainstorm and seek solutions to address these decades-old problems.

Darryl, Josh and I are experienced with the challenges of governing, aware of the challenges facing our community, and excited about Tuckahoe’s future. We’ve worked hard to deserve your support – please vote for all three of us on the Bipartisan line at the bottom of your ballot!

And remember: ten days of early voting at the Eastchester Public Library start Sunday, Oct. 28.

We welcome your help leading up to the election and – always – your involvement in our community.

Sincerely,
